Bone Grafting in Yorkville, Toronto
Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth, however not everyone has enough strong bone to support a dental implant. When this is the case, our Yorkville dentists may suggest a bone graft – to replace missing bone or provide a stronger base for your dental implant.
What is a bone graft?
If our dentists have determined that your jaw bone can’t currently support a dental implant, a bone graft may be an option. Using sterilized bone granules, or shavings of your own bone (usually taken from near your wisdom teeth), they will fill the area where the dental implant will be inserted. Once the area has had time to heal, and for new bone to grow, they can perform the dental implant surgery.
Sinus lifts
A Sinus lift is a type of bone graft performed when there isn’t enough bone in the upper jaw (in the area under your sinuses) to support a dental implant. It’s called a sinus lift because the sinus membrane needs to be brought forward, or lifted, in order to make room for the new bone.
Using the same techniques as a bone graft, the dentist or specialist will place sterilized bone granules into the area. After the bone has had time to heal and regenerate, your dentist can proceed with the dental implant surgery.
