Porcelain veneers for a whole new look

In general, a porcelain veneer is a thin fabricated “shell” that is affixed to the front surface of the tooth.

Porcelain veneers are known to be stronger than other veneer materials, and will not stain or change colour. The treatment procedure usually takes two visits, however at the Accolade Dental Centre porcelain veneers can be completed in one visit with our advanced CEREC technology.

With CEREC technology, the whole procedure is easier and simpler than in the past – there is no need to make an impression, and no need to make any temporary restorations. With one office visit, our specialist takes a three-dimensional digital camera image of the mouth, and sends that image to another computer. With high-tech imaging, we design the “new” tooth and begin fabricating.

At the Accolade Dental Centre, porcelain veneers are designed and fabricated while the patient waits.  The so-called “new” tooth is milled using highly advanced instruments, and the final ceramic material is custom-shaded by the dentist to match the patient’s natural teeth. The CEREC technology ensures flawless results, without mistakes or mismatches, and without any wasted time.

With the entire procedure on-site, CEREC technology allows the dentist to be hands-on. In the event that changes or adjustments are needed, the work can be done immediately. And when complete, the final “new” tooth can be polished, inserted, and cemented into place. The whole reconstruction process takes about three hours, without totally confining the patient to the dentist’s chair.

The benefits and advantages of porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are durable – they are thin and brittle, but become very tough and strong when glued into place. These veneers last for years, and should endure for 10 to 15 years. Without abuse, and with proper care and hygiene, longevity is pretty well guaranteed.

Porcelain veneers are life-like, and when applied, look exactly like natural teeth. Because they are translucent, the veneers imitate the natural characteristics of enamel – this is just not possible with some of the other bonding materials that are available on the market.

Porcelain veneers will not change in coloring, and will resist stains. Unlike some other bonding materials, the porcelain is an impervious material, and will not absorb any stains from such sources as cigarette smoke or dark-colored foods and liquids – a big advantage.

Not every patient is well suited for porcelain veneers

If teeth are damaged or decayed in any way, these issues must be remedied. If there are signs of gum disease, this too must be properly treated. Where teeth have little enamel for any reason, the porcelain veneer will not adhere fully. And for those patients who suffer with bruxism (grinding or clenching) this could also be a problem – it can potentially chip or break the veneers. The dentist will assess and determine whether the patient is suited.

Veneered teeth require care and attention like natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing are vital, and regular visits to the dentist are necessary. Great care should be taken.
